DESCRIPTION:The Department of Art History is pleased to co-sponsor a gallery talk at the Fowler Museum featuring Professor of Art History and Chicana/o Studies and Associate Director of the Chicano Studies Research Center Charlene Villaseñor Black and Lilly Endowment Curator of Art and Religion Patrick A. Polk. Illuminating commentary on the exhibition Descanse en Paz: Memorial Paintings from 19th-Century Mexico will be paired with light refreshments in the courtyard. \nThis exhibition highlights two popular genres of 19th-century Mexican painting commemorating family members who no longer reside in the household— offering them a lasting presence in the home. The first intimately portrays deceased individuals in likenesses imbued with grief and tender remembrance. The subjects—often children—are shown full of life: some appear with toys in hand; others rest in peace (descanse en paz). The second genre is the uniquely Mexican monja coronada or “crowned nun” portrait. Images of flower-adorned “Brides of Christ” were commissioned by the families of women who took Catholic ecclesiastical vows and permanently embarked on cloistered lives. \nThe event will take place on Friday\, October 25 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. DESCRIPTION:Sally Stein\, the UCLA Arts Council Distinguished Scholar Lecturer for 2024\, will deliver her second talk in this two-lecture series on Tuesday\, April 16th.   \nPlease join us for her upcoming talk entitled\, “For Pleasure or Profit & Power? The Beckoning (& still early reckoning) of Color in Interwar American Mass Media & Culture.” \nAfter a brief consideration of one photographer’s rather surprising embrace of color photography – for the photographer in question\, Gisèle Freund\, had quite recently in the mid 1930s published the first doctoral thesis on nineteenth century photography’s development in which she denounces all additions of color – this lecture broadens its focus to consider the interwar emergence of modern color in mass media in a comparative international context. \nThe event will be held in Royce 306 from 4 to 6pm\, with a reception to follow. \nAll are welcome to attend! \nFor more details regarding this lecture\, please check out the event page here.

DESCRIPTION:The UCLA Department of Art History proudly presents the 2024 Patricia McCarron McGinn Lecture\, featuring Charlene Villaseñor Black\, Art History Professor and Faculty Chair of the Chicana/o and Central American Studies. \nProfessor Charlene Villaseñor Black will be delivering a lecture entitled\, “Art against Necropolitics”: \nCan art act in the face of violence? Beginning in the 1990s\, feminist activists and visual artists joined forces to protest feminicide (feminicidio)\, the targeted murders of women and girls\, along the US-Mexico border. Mexican American (Chicana) artist Judithe Hernández produced her moving Juárez series in response. This talk focuses on Hernández’s work\, analyzing her use of rhetorics of memorialization\, including pictorial echoes of Catholic saints and deliberate invocations of indigeneity\, to honor these victims of violence. While situated within the specific locale of the US-Mexico border\, Hernández’s images are also in dialogue with anti-feminicide activism around the globe. Buchloh denouncing the social value of the art of portraiture which\, to that critic’s dismay\, refuses to wither away with the development of twentieth century abstract art. Stein introduces a number of factors for portraiture’s resilience after the rise of abstraction.

SUMMARY:2023 Gretchen Taylor Millson Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The UCLA Department of Art History is pleased to announce Hollis Clayson’s “The Dark Side of the Eiffel Tower” as the 2023 Gretchen Taylor Millson Lecture. \nThe lecture will examine aspects of the famous Parisian Tower’s past that have been forgotten or erased including a stint as the prime focus of French industry anxiety\, service as the tallest symbol on earth of triumphant French colonialism\, and a proposed function as an instrument of brightly illuminated surveillance. \nThis year’s Millson Lecture will be held on Monday\, May 15th at the UCLA Faculty Center. \nClayson was trained as an art historian at Wellesley College (B.A.) and UCLA (M.A. and Ph.D.). She is currently the 2022-23 R. Stanton Avery Distinguished Fellow at the Huntington Library\, as well as the Professor Emerita of Art History and Bergen Evans Professor Emerita in the Humanities at Northwestern University. Clayson hopes that “The Dark Side of the Eiffel Tower”\, a critical account of the inescapabilty of the world’s most visited (paid) tourist attraction\, will historicize and lessen or at least problematize the gravitational pull of the modern anchor of the Lure of Paris. \nThe Gretchen Taylor Millson Distinguished Lectureship was established in memory of UCLA alumnus\, Gretchen Millson\, in December 2009 by her husband\, Dr. John J. Millson. Gretchen graduated from UCLA with a BA from the Art Department in 1961. This endowed fund provides much-needed resources to the department to allow us to grow and continue our long-standing tradition of excellence.

DESCRIPTION:The UCLA Department of Art History presents a lecture by the Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellow Claudia Zapata on Tuesday\, May 2 at 4 PM in Dodd 275. All are welcome! \nTheir talk is entitled “Latine/x and Chicanx Artists in Web3.” \nDescription \nWeb3 is an aspirational and present technological shift and social movement to create a new internet architecture that emphasizes a decentralized web experience to improve democratization and ownership of data. The movement’s definable characteristics include increased integration of XR (extended reality)\, an umbrella term for augmented\, virtual\, and mixed reality technologies; an economic transformation through decentralized finance (DeFi); and the experiential space of the “metaverse\,” a real-time virtual territory of social\, digital engagement. I examine the Latine/x and Chicanx contributions to this next digital chapter ranging from the XR innovator Nonny de la Peña\, top-selling NFT generative artist Itzel Yard\, and J. Balvin’s reggaetón metaverse experiences\, among others. What kind of traditional art narrative disruption\, unprecedented economic access\, and activist lens can these new digital spaces provide for Latine/x and Chicanx artists and creators? I navigate a nascent but rapidly changing virtual environment to articulate the next chapter of art media and the ever-pressing need to analyze the impact of this digital expansion in Latine/x and Chicanx art history and visual culture.
